Pressure pipe 101

Reinforcing concrete with steel to increase structural flexibility has long been used in the water and sewer industries in the form of concrete pressure pipe (CPP), which gives CPP one of the best performance histories and lowest failure rates of any pipe material. It is also highly customizable and requires little maintenance over 70+ years. This article provides a (re)introduction to prestressed and bar-wrapped concrete cylinder pipe for pressurized applications. Examples of using pressure pipe in projects at the City of Bloomington, Indiana Utilities Department, the New Braunfels, Texas Canyon Regional Water Authority, and a sewage tunnel in the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District are provided.
