INSTRUMENTATION FOR THE FIELD OBSERVATION OF FROST ACTION IN SOIL BENEATH SPILLWAYS

THE CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES AS WELL AS HIGHWAYS AND STREETS CAN BE AFFECTED BY SWELLING AND HEAVING OF THE SOIL FOUNDATIONS. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE INSTRUMWNTATION USED IN A PROGRAM INVOLVING THE MEASUREMENT OF FROST ACTION AT 26 SITES. SIMPLE, WORKABLE APPARATUS WAS REQUIRED AT EACH SITE TO DETERMINE SOIL TYPE, PIEZOMETRIC WATER LEVEL, FROST DEPTH, AND AMOUNT OF HEAVE. THE GANDAHL METHYLENE BLUE FROST DEPTH INDICATOR WAS USED AND IS DESCRIBED. STANDPIPE AND CASAGRANDE TYPE PIEZOMETERS WERE USED FOR WATER LEVEL MEASUREMENTS. FROST HEAVE MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE USING A SYSTEM OF BRASS PLATES SET AT VARIOUS LEVELS AND EXTENDED TO THE SURFACE. A SET OF TYPICAL OBSERVATIONS AT ONE OF THE SITES IS PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED. /CGRA/
