Reducing congestion from road works: Part 1, Use of road plates
This report looks at using road plates over road openings to alleviate traffic congestion during on-going road construction. A cost benefit analysis, literature review, and road tests were conducted. Road tests investigated the use of plates to cover transverse openings, linear trenches, and large rectangular openings. Plates tested were 40mm thick steel, 12mm thick steel, bridge panels, frame and concrete filled covers, composite, hinged ramp, and 30mm thick airport plate. Test results cover installation, removal, wheel loads, braking and traction, ride quality, traffic speed, skid resistance, noise level, and displacement.
