CASE HISTORIES OF HIGHWAY STRUCTURES ON SOFT GROUND; BOX- TYPE CULVERTS AND EMBANKMENTS

TWO TYPICAL CASE HISTORIES ARE PRESENTED ON THE TREATMENT OF SOFT GROUND IN THE FIELD ON THE TOKYO- NAGOYA EXPRESSWAY. ONE IS A SUCCESSFUL CASE, THE OTHER IS THE OPPOSITE. IN THE FORMER, CONTINUOUS BOX-TYPE CULVERTS WERE CONSTRUCTED BY THE PRELOADING METHOD, THAT IS, USING A FLOATING FOUNDATION STRUCTURE ON SOFT GROUND. THE LATTER CASE CONCERNS AN EMBANKMENT WHERE BASE FAILURE OCCURED ON HEAVY SOFT GROUND. THE EMBANKMENT WAS RECONSTRUCTED BY THE ARTIFICIAL SLIDING REPLACEMENT METHOD. ONE OF THE REASONS FOR FAILURE MAY BE REDUCING THE STRENGTH OF CLAY BY DRIVING SAND PILES. THE CRACKS IN THE EMBANKMENT WERE FILLED BY MORTAR GROUTING. /TRRL/
