STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS AND DILATION OF SANDY SOILS UNDER SHEAR /IN RUSSIAN/

THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF THE DIRECT TRANSLATIONAL SHEAR OF A SANDY SOIL FOR THE DOMAIN OF SMALL NORMAL STRESSES BETWEEN 10 TO THE NEGATIVE THREE AND 5X10 TO THE NEGATIVE TWO KG/CM SQUARED AND FOR THE FOLLOWING ALTERNATING PARAMETERS: INITIAL DENSITY, GRAIN-SIZE DISTRIBUTION, AND THE GLYCERIN CONTENT OF THE SAND. TESTS ON GLASS AND PORCELAIN BALLS HAVE BEEN MADE AS WELL. THE DILATATION HAS BEEN OBSERVED DURING SHEARING AND IN THE LIMIT STRESS STATE AND PROVED TO OCCUR ALONG THE ENTIRE SAMPLE THICKNESS. THE DEPENDENCE OF THE AVERAGE SPECIFIC DILATATION ON THE THE SHEAR DISPLACEMENT HAS BEEN ASCERTAINED. /AMR/
