APPLIED GEOMECHANICS

THE TERM GEOMECHANICS EMBRACES THE INTERACTIONS OF FORCES AND DISPLACEMENTS WITHIN THE MATERIALS OF THE EARTH'S CRUST AND, AS A COROLLARY, INCLUDES ALL ASPECTS OF THE DEFINITION OF THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SOILS AND ROCKS, WITH APPROPRIATE CONSIDERATION OF THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTORS DETERMINING SUCH PROPERTIES. THE TERM APPLIED GEOMECHANICS DENOTES THOSE AREAS OF GEOMECHANICS THAT ELUCIDATE, IN A PRACTICAL WAY, PROBLEMS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING AND MINING ENGINEERING. WITHIN CSIRO, A SOIL MECHANICS SECTIONS WAS FOUNDED IN 1955, ADVANCING TO THE STATUS OF DIVISION IN 1967. OWING TO THE RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF MINING IN AUSTRALIA, THE DIVISION'S RESEARCH CAPABILITIES HAVE BEEN MORE AND MORE ORIENTED TOWARD ROCK MECHANICS, AND IN 1970 THIS ENLARGEMENT OF SCOPE WAS RECOGNIZED BY THE NEW TITLE, DIVISION OF APPLIED GEOMECHANICS. THIS FIRST PROGRESS REPORT OF THE NEW DIVISION REPORTS THE ACTIVITIES OF ITS NINE DEPARTMENTS, TO WIT: ADMINISTRATION, COMMUNICATION SERVICES, TECHNICAL SERVICES, EARTHEN MATERIAL OCCURRENCES AND UTILIZATION (IN ENGINEERING), MATERIAL SCIENCE - EARTHEN MATERIALS, STRESS--DEFORMATION STUDIES IN SOILS AND ROCKS, INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT IN GEOMECHANICS AND GEOTECHNOLOGY, INTEGRATED GEOMECHANICS PROJECTS, AND REGIONAL LABORATORIES.
