Unmanned aircraft systems: Coming to an airspace near you

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued the long-awaited Screening Information Request (SIR) in February of 2013, establishing a program to integrate Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS) in six test sites. In an effort to gain an understanding of UAS and their potential use and impact on airports, it is necessary to consider certain issues, such as integration into safety management systems, community outreach, airport facility standards, air traffic control operations, and environmental impacts, as this article discusses.
