A METHOD OF STRESS ANALYSIS IN EXCAVATION SLOPES

THE NEED TO IMPROVE THE METHODS OF STABILITY ANALYSIS OF SLOPES BY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE STRESSES IN THEM BEFORE FAILURE IS UNDERLINED AND A NEW APPROXIMATE METHOD FOR OBTAINING THESE STRESSES IS DESCRIBED. THE METHOD IS BASED ON A DIAGRAM OF THE NETWORK OF ISOSTATIC LINES WHICH THE EXCAVATION OF THE SLOPE PRODUCES IN THE SOIL, ASSUMED TO BE INITIALLY HORIZONTAL. COMPUTERS BEING NOT INDISPENSABLE TO APPLY THE METHOD, THIS CAN BE USED IN PRELIMINARY ANALYSES TO BE EVENTUALLY COMPLETED BY COMPUTER METHODS; IT CAN ALSO BE USED AS A ROUGH CHECK ON ELECTRONIC COMPUTATIONS AND FINALLY CAN HELP TO IMPROVE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE FORCES INVOLVED IN THE STABILITY OF SLOPES. AN INSTANCE OF APPLICATION OF THE METHOD IS PRESENTED AND THE RESULTS THUS OBTAINED ARE COMPARED WITH THE VALUES YIELDED BY THE FINITE ELEMENT AND THE INTEGRAL METHODS. /AUTHOR/
