THE USE OF MODAL ANALYSIS IN THE MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF ROCK MASSES

THE PRESENT PAPER DEALS WITH A RESEARCH PROGRAM STARTED AT THE LABORATORIO NACIONAL DE ENGENHARIA CIVIL IN MAY 1964 WITH A VIEW TO DEVELOPING QUANTITATIVE METHODS FOR DERIVING FROM MICROPETROGRAPHIC OBSERVATIONS QUALITY INDICES WHICH CHARACTERIZE ROCK MASSES AT EACH POINT. THE PROCEDURES USED, THE PROCESSING OF THE RESULTS AND THE CONCLUSIONS SO FAR DRAWN ARE DESCRIBED. THE AUTORS JUSTIFY THE INTEREST OF THIS STUDY AND SHOW HOW, BY MEANS OF MICROPETROGRAPHIC MODAL ANALYSIS, ROCK MASSES CAN BE CHARACTERIZED AT EACH POINT BY AND UNFAVOURABLE INFLUENCES OF THE DIFFERENT MINERAL COMPONENTS AND THE MICROFRACTURES PRESENT IN THE ROCKS. EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION PROVING THAT SUCH INDICES CAN BE CORRELATED WITH THE DEFORMABILITY OF THE ROCKS ARE PRESENTED.
