Intermodal Transport – Basic Factor of Croatian Integration into European Traffic Flows

Intermodalni transport – temeljni cimbenik ukljucivanja Republike Hrvatske u europske prometne tokove

The development of information technologies and the market globalization have created the need for the highest quality organization of freight transport, whose requirements are met by intermodal transport. The aim of analysing and defining the structure of intermodal systems in the European frames is, in Croatia as well, to evaluate the fundamental factors of intermodal transport development. The advantages of future development of intermodal transport in Croatia result from her geographical position, the transport of which should be shifted to railway traffic, traffic on inland waterways and to maritime traffic. The mentioned advantages may be used by systemic study of the traffic system which allow for the competitiveness of intermodal terminals. The enlargement of the European Union towards north-eastern countries has opened up new market, which has attracted also the traffic routes. Therefore, when speaking about the development of intermodal transport, the freight flows should be considered as the intermodal transport development generators. The delays in intermodal transport chain often represent a big barrier for the possibility of defining competitiveness in international comparison on the transport market. The intermodal transport development concept in the Republic of Croatia should be based on the guidelines related to the maritime, river, and railway transport and the logistics.
