In the first article, the author, Ingenieur Principal at the SNCF, explains how the use of the thyristor in direct-current applications has enabled a purely static voltage regulation to be achieved and consequently ensure that the basic traction functions are reliable, a problem that does not arise in alternating current working. He then gives some fundamental data on choppers, the principle and the conditions of their operation, the characteristics of the constructional parts; he considers the use of several choppers (interlaced) for high power, and concludes by explaining the advantages of fitting choppers which greatly change the performance of the tractive unit. In the second article, Mr. Cossie gives an historical outline of the research which began in 1965 and has enabled this 1500V convertor to be used in practice; tests have been carried out using increasing power to culminate the development of very high-power equipment by interlacing elemental choppers. For this purpose, an experimental unit has been built, the performance and operation of which are described by the author. He states that the tests results have been excellent and predicts wide applications.
