STRESSES IN WEDGES OF COHESIONLESS MATERIALS FORMED BY FREE DISCHARGE AT THE APE

THEORIES CONCERNING COHESIONLESS WEDGES OF INFINITE HEIGHT WERE SUMMARIZED AND DISCUSSED. STRESS DISTRIBUTIONS FOR A 30-DEG. SYMMETRICAL WEDGE WERE COMPUTED ACCORDINGLY. EXPERIMENTS DESIGNED TO EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF BASE FRICTION AND BASE MOVEMENT ON THE CRITICAL EQUILIBRIUM OF FINITE WEDGES ALSO WERE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT: (1) ASSUMPTIONS OF THE PLASTIC THEORY FOR COHESIONLESS SOIL MEDIA ARE ACCEPTABLE, (2) THEORETICAL SOLUTIONS VALID FOR WEDGES OF INFINITE HEIGHT CAN BE APPLIED TO THOSE OF FINITE HEIGHT, (3) BOOTH'S THEORY CAN SUBSTITUTE FOR SOKOLOVSKI'S, AND (4) RENDULIC'S GRAPHICAL METHOD ALSO CAN BE USED TO ESTIMATE THE HORIZONTAL THRUST. /ARTICLE/
