GENERAL CONSIDERATION ON MECHANICAL SOIL PROPERTIES, NEW MEASURING INSTRUMENTS, DYKE CONSTRUCTION ON MUD FOUNDATIONS

A CRITICAL STUDY IS MADE OF THE APPLICABILITY OF CONTINUOUS-MEDIUM ASSUMPTIONS TO VARIOUS SOIL TYPES, NOTABLY CLAY AND MULTI-PHASE MEDIA. THE EFFECTS OF SOIL COMPACTNESS AND COHESION ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SATURATED FINE SOILS AND OF THE TIME FACTOR ARE CONSIDERED AND APPLIED TO TRANSVERSE DIKE FOUNDATION REINFORCEMENT CALCULATIONS. A NEW LABORATORY INSTRUMENT FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF PLASTIC SOIL FLOW PROPERTIES UNDER HIGH STRAIN AND A NEW INSTRUMENT FOR IN-SITU MEASUREMENT OF INTRINSIC BOREHOLE CURVES ARE DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
