AN ANALYSIS OF ONE DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION

THE STRESS-STRAIN-TIME RELATIONSHIP OF A PEAT UNDERGOING ONE DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION IS DEFINED. THE DEFINITION AND EVALUATION OF THE STRAIN PARAMETERS OF COMPRESSION AND SHEAR ARE DESCRIBED. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE CONDITION OF ONE DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION, IN WHICH A NET ZERO HORIZONTAL STRAIN EXISTS AT ALL ELEMENTS, MAY BE PRODUCED BY SUPERIMPOSING THE INDEPENDENT COMPONENTS OF COMPRESSION AND SHEAR. THIS CONDITION IS SEEN TO EXIST ONLY WHEN THE LATERAL STRESS IS CONTINUOUSLY ALTERED. A NUMERICAL ANALYSIS, BASED ON THE PROPOSED THEORY AND ON A RIGID LABORATORY TESTING PROGRAM, IS USED TO PREDICT THE BEHAVIOR OF THE PEAT DEPOSIT CONSOLIDATING UNDER A KNOWN LOAD. THE ANALYSIS IS PROGRAMMED ON A DIGITAL COMPUTER TO EVALUATE PORE PRESSURE, LATERAL STRESS AND SETTLEMENT DISTRIBUTIONS THROUGHTOUT THE DEPOSIT AT GIVEN TIME INTERVALS EXTENDING OVER A TWO YEAR PERIOD. /FORAS/RRL/
