Stimulation of Public Urban Passenger Transport through Transport Demand Management

Poticanje javnoga gradskoga putni~kog prijevoza upravljanjem prijevozne potra`nje

The aim and purpose of this paper is, in the context of transport demand management (TDM) strategies, to analyze the ways of increasing its share in the “modal split” distribution of travelling by public urban passenger transport (PUPT). For this purpose it is necessary to increase the attractiveness of PUPT by increasing the speed of travel. The measures to increase the speed of PUPT vehicles, which are implemented in the European cities as “good practices” include allowing priority to vehicles separated from the rest of the traffic flows and providing priority at light-controlled intersections. The research (pilot project) and the simulation of the traffic in the City of Zagreb indicate that it is possible to increase the speed of travel, giving priority to public transport vehicles, which would result in greater attractiveness of public transport and modal shift in the distribution of motorized modes of travel in the City.
