A METHOD OF STRESS ANALYSIS IN EXCAVATION SLOPES

THE NEED TO IMPROVE SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS METHODS BY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE STRESSES BEFORE FAILURE IS UNDERLINED. A NEW APPROXIMATE METHOD FOR OBTAINING THESE STRESSES IS DESCRIBED. THE METHOD IS BASED ON A DIAGRAM OF THE NETWORK OF ISOSTATIC LINES WHICH THE SLOPE EXCAVATION PRODUCES IN THE SOIL, ASSUMED TO BE INITIALLY HORIZONTAL. THIS CAN BE USED (1) IN PRELIMINARY ANALYSES TO BE EVENTUALLY COMPLETED BY COMPUTER METHODS, (2) AS A ROUGH CHECK ON ELECTRONIC COMPUTATIONS, AND (3) TO IMPROVE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE FORCES INVOLVED IN SLOPE STABILITY. AN APPLICATION OF THE METHOD IS PRESENTED AND THE RESULTS OBTAINED ARE COMPARED WITH THE VALUES YIELDED BY THE FINITE ELEMENT AND THE INTEGRAL METHODS. /RRL(A)/
