Guards lose cover

This article takes a look at a Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT)-funded study that explores various options for controlling vegetation under guardrails while maintaining functionality and with an eye to reducing use of pesticides in order to be more environmentally-friendly. Methods include mechanical control - mowing and hand trimming; cultural control - establishing a plant species which will compete with and suppress growth of unwanted brush; weed barriers - fiber and rubber mats; and herbicides. Optimal combinations of these methods are discussed, as well as cost comparisons, and data is presented from DelDOT's program as to its efficacy.
