Three maximum-efficiency yard designs

This article offers suggestions as to how to make the most of a maintenance facility/storage space, in terms of managing the yard's workflow while keeping in mind three basic elements: work zones, storage areas, and vehicle circulation. Work zones should be designed to create swing space. Examples of proposed facilities with layout illustrations are provided for a highway facility in Deerfield, Massachusetts, a public services facility in Lexington, Massachusetts, and a Department of Public Works building/site in Northbridge, Massachusetts.
