SETTLEMENT OF STRUCTURES ON DEEP ALLUVIAL SANDY SEDIMENTS IN DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA

THE VALIDITY OF FIELD CORRELATIONS BETWEEN (1) THE MODULI OF COMPRESSIBILITY OF HETEROGENEOUS ESTUARINE SEDIMENTS OBTAINED FROM DEEP HELICAL PLATE-LOADING TESTS, AND (2) THEIR DENSITIES AS REFLECTED BY STANDARD PENETRATION TESTS AND DEEP SOUNDINGS IS CHECKED BY MEANS OF A LARGE PLATE-LOADING TEST. THE SAME CORRELATIONS ARE APPLIED TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE SETTLEMENT OF FULL-SCALE STRUCTURES, AND THE RESULTS SUGGEST THAT IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE TO MAKE RELIABLE PREDICTIONS OF SETTLEMENT TO AN ACCURACY OF WITHIN 35 PERCENT. /RRL(A)/
