LATERAL STRESSES IN UNIAXIAL STRAIN

THE CONDITIONS OF INITIAL COMPRESSION, UNLOADING AND RELOADING UNDER WHICH IT IS POSSIBLE TO DEFINE THE HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL STRESS RATIO ARE OUTLINED. THE DIFFICULTY OF MEASURING STRESS IN-SITU IS RECALLED, AND DETAILS GIVEN OF THE TECHNIQUE USED FOR APPLYING UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION IN THE LABORATORY IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE ACCURATE VALUE OF THE HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL STRESS RATIO. THE OEDOMETER GIVES BETTER RESULTS THAN THE TRIAXIAL APPARATUS. IN THE CASE OF INITIAL COMPRESSION, THE JAKY FORMULA OR ITS DERIVATIONS APPEARS TO GIVE A GOOD APPROXIMATION OF THE VALUE OF THE HORIZONTAL-VERTICAL STRESS RATIO FOR CLAY AND SAND. IN THE CASE OF DECOMPRESSION, A FORMULA BASED ON NUMEROUS TEST RESULTS IS PRESENTED WHICH CAN BE APPLIED TO SAND AND CLAY. IN THE CASE OF RECOMPRESSION, FEW TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT AND RESULTS SEEM CONTRADICTORY. /LCPC/RRL/
