MICROSTRUCTURAL OBSERVATIONS ON SHEAR ZONES FROM SLIPS IN NATURAL CLAYS
DETAILS OF THIN SECTIONS OBTAINED FROM THE SHEAR ZONES OF FIVE SLIPS ARE PRESENTED. THE STRUCTURES INDUCED BY THE MOVEMENT DEPEND ON THE COMPOSITION OF THE MATERIAL, ITS CONSISTENCY AND THE MAGNITUDE OF THE DISPLACEMENT INVOLVED. DISPLACEMENT SHEARS, RIEDEL SHEARS AND INDUCED PREFERRED ORIENTATION HAVE ALL BEEN OBSERVED ALTHOUGH NOT IN EACH CASE. A SEMI-QUANTITATIVE SCALE FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PREFERRED ORIENTATION FROM AGGREGATE BIREFRINGENCE MEASUREMENTS IS ALSO GIVEN. /LCPC/RRL/
