COMPARISONS OF FIELD VANE AND LABORATORY SHEAR STRENGTHS OF SOFT COHESIVE SOILS

THE IN-SITU SHEAR STRENGTH OF TWO DIFFERENT SOFT COHESIVE DEPOSITS WAS DETERMINED WITH A FIELD VANE. ONE IS A SOFT SLIGHTLY ORGANIC COHESIVE LAKE DEPOSIT IN NORTHERN GREECE. THE SECOND ONE IS AN ORGANIC CLAY AND PEAT, OCCURING IN THE NORTH SEA COAST IN GERMANY. IN THIS DEPOSIT LONG PLANT FIBERS, MOSTLY WITH A HORIZONTAL ORIENTATION, ARE PRESENT. THE RESULTS OF THE FIELD TESTS WERE VERIFIED IN THE LABORATORY WITH A ROTATION VISCOSIMETER, TRIAXIAL CELL AND A FALLCONE. THEREBY FOR THE LAKE DEPOSIT A RELATIVELY GOOD AGREEMENT WAS FOUND BETWEEN THE FIELD AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS. HOWEVER, IN THE CASE OF THE COASTAL DEPOSIT, THE VALUES MEASURED WITH THE FIELD VANE WERE ALWAYS HIGHER, ON THE AVERAGE BY A FACTOR OF 2, THAN THOSE OBTAINED IN THE LABORATORY. THE SHEAR STRENGTHS OF THE LAKE DEPOSIT OBTAINED BY FIELD AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS WERE CONFIRMED BY MEANS OF OBSERVATIONS ON TEST EMBANKMENTS IN THE FIELD. A LARGE SCALE LOADING TEST CARRIED OUT IN THE REGION OF THE COASTAL DEPOSIT SHOWED THAT THE VALUES OF SHEAR STRENGTH OF THIS DEPOSIT MEASURED WITH FIELD VANE ARE TOO HIGH. HERE THE VALUES OBTAINED IN THE LABORATORY ARE TO BE USED FOR THE DESIGN. /LCPC/RRL/
