DYNAMICS OF A VISCOELASTIC HALF-SPACE /IN FRENCH/

THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS THESIS ON THE BEHAVIOR OF A VISCOELASTIC HALFSPACE SUBJECTED TO VIBRATION WERE (1) TO INTRODUCE THE CONCEPT OF VISCOELASTICITY IN THE CALCULATION OF FOUNDATIONS, (2) TO DEVELOP A METHOD OF OBTAINING THE COMPLEX MODULUS AND MODULUS OF RELAXATION OF A VISCOELASTIC HALFSPACE, AND (3) TO STUDY THE DISTRIBUTION OF LOADS UNDER A CIRCULAR PLATE RESTING ON THE SOIL MASS FOR VARIOUS VIBRATION FREQUENCIES. THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE PROBLEM ARE RECALLED, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE RESEARCH INTO THE ELASTIC RANGE IS PRESENTED, AND AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE BEHAVIOR OF AN ORLY YELLOW SILT FOUNDATION IS DESCRIBED. VIBRATIONS, AMPLITUDES AND PHASES WERE MEASURED WITH A HEAVY HYDRAULIC VIBRATOR AND ITS ELECTRONIC DEVICES DEVELOPED BY L.C.P.C. DETAILS OF THIS APPARATUS ARE GIVEN TOGETHER WITH METHODS OF MEASUREMENT TO BE USED ON A COMPACTED OR NON-COMPACTED SILT MASS. THE DISPLACEMENT AT THE CENTER OF THE PLATE IS ANALYZED. /LCPC/RRL/
