DYNAMIC LOADING OF FLEXIBLE SQUARE TUBES BURIED IN COMPACTED CLAY

THE EFFECTS OF DYNAMIC OVERPRESSURES ON THIN-WALLED SQUARE TUBES BURIED IN A COMPACTED CLAY MEDIUM IS REPORTED. THE EXPERIMENTS WERE INTENDED TO BE COMPLEMENTARY TO PREVIOUS EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT ON SIMILAR TUBES BURIED IN CLAY AND SAND AND SUBJECTED TO DYNAMIC AND STATIC OVERPRESSURES. THE DYNAMIC COLLAPSE PRESSURES WERE PREDICTED FROM THE STATIC COLLAPSE PRESSURES OBSERVED IN FORMER EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED WITH SIMILAR TUBES BURIED IN COMPACTED CLAY. IT WAS CALCULATED THAT THE DYNAMIC COLLAPSE PRESSURES WOULD OCCUR IN COMPARATIVELY SMALL RANGE OBTAINED BY MULTIPLYING THE OBSERVED STATIC COLLAPSE PRESSURES FOR A GIVEN DEPTH OF COVER BY A SMALL FACTOR. THE RESULTS OBTAINED WERE SHOWN TO BE IN CLOSE AGREEMENT WITH THIS PREDICTION. THE MAIN FEATURES CONSIDERED WERE COVER DEPTH, COLLAPSE MODE, PRESSURE-DURATION AND DEFLECTION-TIME RELATIONSHIPS.
