DESIGN OF FOUNDATIONS ON SAND BY THE SPT METHOD

THE EFFECT OF THE FOUNDATION SHAPE AND GROUND WATER ON SETTLEMENT, BASED ON FIELD RECORDS OF 11 BUILDINGS WAS INVESTIGATED. IT IS FOUND THAT THE LENGTH OF THE FOUNDATION AS WELL AS THE GROUND WATER EXERT ONLY NEGLIGIBLE EFFECTS ON THE SETTLEMENT. AS AN OUTCOME OF THIS INVESTIGATION, EXTENDED DESIGN CHARTS WHICH TAKE THE FULL VALUE OF THE PUBLISHED STANDARD PRESSURE-SETTLEMENT CURVES ARE PRESENTED. IN THESE CHARTS, THE ALLOWABLE SETTLEMENT HAS BEEN INCREASED TO 2 INCHES TO ALLOW FOR FLEXIBILITY IN DESIGN AND A FAMILY OF LOAD CURVES IS INCORPORATED TO FACILITATE THE DESIGN PROCEDURE. IT IS ALSO SHOWN THAT IMPROVED AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE PREDICTED AND THE OBSERVED SETTLEMENTS CAN BE OBTAINED BY USING THESE CHARTS. /RRL/
