NEW METHODS OF LARGE-SCALE SHEAR TESTING OF ROCKS IN-SITU /CZECH/

A NEW METHOD OF SHEAR TESTING WAS INTRODUCED DURING DETERMINATION OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ROCK AT SOME STORAGE RESERVOIR CONSTRUCTION SITES IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA. EACH TEST CONSISTS OF TWO PHASES: IN PHASE ONE THE LIMIT SHEAR STRENGTH IS DETERMINED IN THE USUAL WAY; IN PHASE TWO THE NORMAL LOADING IS REDUCED IN STAGES AND THE CORRESPONDING TANGENTIAL LOADING IS DETERMINED AFTER ALL DEFORMATIONS HAVE BEEN STABILIZED. THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE ROCK ON A SURFACE OF MECHANICAL DISCONTINUITY CAN BE DETERMINED FROM THE O/T LINE. /FG/RRL/
