CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS. SOIL HYDRAULICS. DRAINAGE AND LOWERING OF THE WATER-TABLE /IN FRENCH/

DURING EXCAVATION WORKS IN WATER-LOGGED GROUND, IT IS NECESSARY TO LOWER THE WATER-TABLE BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE EXCAVATION. APPROPRIATE DRAINAGE METHODS FOR A GIVEN SITE CAN ONLY BE SELECTED AFTER A DETAILED GEOLOGICAL AND HYDROGEOLOGICAL STUDY HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT. IT IS RARELY POSSIBLE TO DRAW UP A PRECISE THEORY CONCERNING THE DIFFERENT DRAINAGE NETWORKS OWING TO THE LACK OF PRECISION CONCERNING THE SOIL HOMOGENEITY AND PERMEABILITY VALUES. A STUDY IS MADE OF THE PERFORMANCE OF DRAINAGE TRENCHES AND WELLS, AND OF THEIR APPLICATION TO THE DRAINAGE OF EXCAVATIONS AND CONTROL OF WATER FLOW IN SLOPES. THIS STUDY IS BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE SOIL IS HOMOGENEOUS AND ISOTROPIC, AND THAT THE LOWER PART OF THE WATER-TABLE IS RESTRAINED BY A HORIZONTAL WALL. WHEN THE INCLINATION OF THE WALL IS SLIGHT, IT GENERALLY CORRESPONDS TO THE FLOW OF THE WATER-TABLE. THIS FACTOR MUST BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN THE DIFFERENT FLOWS (WATER-TABLE AND LOWERING) ARE SUPERIMPOSED. /LCPC-RRL/
