THE MECHANICAL AND GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF LOESS ARE DISCUSSED. THE LAWS GOVERNING SUBSIDENCE PHENOMENA IN OPEN-PORED LOESS SOIL SUBJECTED TO THE ACTION OF WATER ARE STUDIED TOGETHER WITH THE FACTORS GOVERNING THE RATE AND MAGNITUDE OF SUBSIDENCE. METHODS OF PREVENTING THIS PHENOMENON ARE OUTLINED, AND LABORATORY AND IN-SITU STUDY TECHNIQUES DESCRIBED. /LCPC/RRL/
