CRITICISM OF THE VALUE OF THE RESULTS OF DETERMINATION OF TOTAL POROSITY AND VOIDS DISTRIBUTION IN SOIL (IN FRENCH)

THE AUTHOR CONSIDERS THE ERRORS WHICH CAN OCCUR DURING SAMPLING, AND THEN DISCUSSES THE POROSITY VALUE AND BOIDS DISTRIBUTION IN SOIL. ERRORS DURING THE PREPARATION OF UNDISTURBED SAMPLES CAN BE DUE TO HANDLING, DIMENSIONS OF THE SAMPLE OR POOR SELECTION OF SAMPLING TIME. THE VALUE OF THE TOTAL POROSITY TEST RESULTS VARIES ACCORDING TO THE NATURE OF THE INFORMATION TO BE DEDUCED FROM THE TOTAL POROSITY: FOR DETERMINING A COMPACTION INDEX, THE VALUE OF THE RESULTS OF DETERMINATION OF TOTAL POROSITY CAN BE TAKEN AS NEARLY CORRECT PROVIDING THAT DATA FROM CONTROL SAMPLES TAKEN AT THE SAME TIME ARE AVAILABLE, BUT WHEN INTERPRETING TOTAL POROSITY AS A POROSITY RELATIVE TO 100 PER CENT, SERIOUS ERRORS CAN OCCUR. A STUDY OF THE VALUE OF DATA ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF DIFFERENT POROSITY GROUP IS ALSO PRESENTED. /LCPC/FESR/CRIC/RRL/
