SUBSURFACE DRAINAGE INVESTIGATION 1945-1946: REPORT OF FIELD INVESTIGATIONS

TEST INSTALLATIONS MADE AND FIELD INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED AT TWELVE SELECTED AIRFIELD IN THE UNITED STATES ARE AT TWELVE SELECTED AIRFIELDS IN THE UNITED STATES ARE FIELDS CHOSEN WERE DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS: SURVEY SITES AND COMPREHENSIVE SITES. IN EACH OF THESE GROUPS, INVESTIGATIONS WERE CONDUCTED AT SITES WHERE COMBINATION DRAINS AND SUBSURFACE DRAINS WERE INSTALLED. AT SURVEY SITES, AN INSPECTION OF THE FIELDS WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE CONDITION, OPERATION, MAINTENANCE AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM. AT COMPREHENSIVE SITES, THE OPERATION OF THE SUBSURFACE DRAINS WAS INVESTIGATED IN A SYSTEMATIC MANNER, MEASURING THE DISCHARGE OF THE DRAINS AT SELECTED LOCATIONS, GAGING THE PRECIPITATION AND OBSERVING THE GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS BY MEANS OF OBSERVATION WELLS. THE OPERATION OF COMBINATION DRAINS WAS INVESTIGATED BY MEASURING THE DISCHARGE OF SELECTED DRAINS AND OBTAINING PRECISE RECORDS OF PRECIPITATION FOR EVERY STORM. THE SELECTION OF SITES WAS MADE SO THAT BOTH COMBINATION AND SUBSURFACE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS INSTALLED UNDER DIFFERENT SOIL, CLIMATE AND GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS COULD BE STUDIED.
