THE FLOW OF HOMOGENEOUS FLUIDS THROUGH POROUS MEDIA: ANALOGIES WITH OTHER PHYSICAL PROBLEMS

THE GENERAL PROBLEM OF THE STEADY-STATE FLOW OF FLUIDS THROUGH POROUS MEDIA MAY BE REDUCED TO THE SOLUTION OF LAPLACE'S EQUATION WITH APPROPRIATE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. THE FORMAL CORRESPONDENCE IS PRESENTED IN A TABLE BETWEEN THE HYDRODYNAMICS OF THE STEADY-STATE FLUID FLOW THROUGH THE POROUS MEDIA AND THE PROBLEMS OF STEADY-STATE HEAT FLOW, ELECTROSTATICS, AND CURRENT FLOW IN CONTINUOUS CONDUCTORS. THESE ANALYSES MAY BE OF ASSISTANCE IN VISUALIZING THE FLOW PROBLEMS TO THOSE FAMILIAR WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS IN HEAT FLOW, ELECTROSTATICS OR CURRENT CONDUCTION.
