THE RESPONSE OF EARTH BANKS DURING EARTHQUAKES

A METHOD IS PRESENTED FOR INVESTIGATING THE RESPONSE OF EARTH BANKS TO EARTHQUAKE GROUND MOTIONS. USING THIS APPROACH IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE AN ASSESSMENT OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE BANK ON THE GROUND SURFACE RESPONSE, THE STRESSES DEVELOPED IN THE BANK BY A GIVEN BASE MOTION INDUCED BY AN EARTHQUAKE, AND THE STABILITY OF THE BANK DURING THE EARTHQUAKE. IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT THE OVERALL RESPONSE OF AN EARTH BANK MAY VARY WIDELY DEPENDING ON THE NATURE OF THE SOILS INVOLVED, THE HEIGHT OF THE BANK AND THE DEPTH OF THE FOUNDATION SOIL. WHILE IT IS RECOGNIZED THAT THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE SOIL BEHAVES AS A LINEAR-ELASTIC MATERIAL IS A LIMITATION OF THE ANALYSIS, THE RESULTS OBTAINED PROVIDE A USEFUL GUIDE IN ASSESSING THE BEHAVIOR OF AN EARTH BANK. COMPENSATING CORRECTIONS FOR THIS LIMITATION CAN BE INCLUDED BY SELECTING APPROPRIATE MATERIAL PROPERTIES TO BE USED IN THE ANALYSIS OF ANY GIVEN CASE. /AUTHOR/
