ON THE STABILTY OF VERTICAL SIDES IN A SLURRY TRENCH (PART 2) /IN JAPANESE/

THE STABILITY OF THE VERTICAL SIDES DURING CONSTRUCTION OF UNDERGROUND WALLS BY THE SLURRY TRENCH METHOD IS INVESTIGATED. FROM APPRECIATION OF EXISTING THEORIES AND FROM SOME RESULTS OF LABORATORY AND FIELD MEASUREMENTS, IT WAS FOUND THAT FAILURES HAD A THREE-DIMENSIONAL CURVED SHAPE, WHICH COULD BE RECOGNIZED APPROXIMATELY AS AN HORIZONTAL CYLINDER. AN ANALYSIS IS MADE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS ASSUMPTION. THE STABILITY OF TRENCHES SUPPORTED BY A BENTONITE SLURRY DEPENDS ON THE HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE OF THE SLURRY, ON THE EFFECTS OF ARCHING IN THE VICINITY OF TRENCHES (IN THIS ANALYSIS, SHEARING RESISTANCE OF BOTH SIDES OF THE CYLINDRICAL SOIL MASS), AND ON THE PERMEABILITY OF THE BENTONITE CAKE AS AN IMPERMEABLE FILM. THE PASSIVE RESISTANCE OF THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE BENTONITE SLURRY IS NEGLIGIBLE. SINCE THE COEFFICIENT OF PERMEABILITY OF THE BENTONITE CAKE, AS MEASURED BY THE API STANDARD FILTRATION TEST, IS ABOUT 0.00000001 CM/SEC, BENTONITE CAKE MAY BE CONSIDERED AS AN IMPERMEABLE FILM. CONSEQUENTLY, THERE ARE NO HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE LOSSES IN THE SLURRY RESISTED BY EARTH PRESSURE AND THE HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE OF GROUND WATER. TWO RESULTS OF CALCULATIONS BY THE ANALYSIS ON PRACTICAL TRENCHES ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
