WORKSHOP ON LOW CLASS ROAD CONSTRUCTION USING VOLCANIC CINDERS AND PUMICE

IN OCTOBER 1970 A WORKSHOP ATTENDED BY ENGINEERS FROM OREGON, WASHINGTON, AND CALIFORNIA WAS HELD IN KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON. THE WORKSHOP COMPRISED A NUMBER OF FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND DISCUSSIONS (FIRST DAY) AND A FIELD TRIP TO SEVERAL NEARBY SITES WHERE VOLCANIC CINDERS AND PUMICE WERE USED IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION (SECOND DAY). THE TOPICS OF THE PAPERS WERE AS FOLLOWS: (1) PERFORMANCE RATING FOR AGGREGATE SURFACE ROADS, (2) CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS FOR CINDERS USED AS ROAD SURFACING AGGREGATE, (3) QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENT OF DUSTING ON AGGREGATE SURFACE ROADS, (4) USE OF PUMICE AS A ROAD CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL, (5) USE OF VOLCANIC CINDERS IN COUNTY ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE, (6) ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS ATTEMPTED USING VOLCANIC CINDERS, AND (7) ASPHALT-TREATED CINDERS USED ON THE MEDICINE LAKE ROAD.
