THERMAL INSULATION IN THE FINNISH HIGHWAYS AND AIRPORTS /IN SWEDISH/

SINCE 1964 EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED TO FIND SUITABLE INSULATING MATERIAL FOR HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION. TABLES ARE PRESENTED SHOWING THE TOTAL COSTS AND THE CONSTRUCTION COSTS FOR EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE, EXTRUDED POLYSTYRENE, LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE, AND EXCELSIOR. THERMAL INSULATING MATERIALS HAVE UNDERGONE (1) WATER CONTENT TESTS FOR SOME OF THE MATERIALS; (2) PLACEMENT DEPTH TESTS-70 CM BEING THE NORM; (3) COMPRESSIBILITY TESTS CARRIED OUT WITH AN OEDOMETER SHOW THAT THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH FOR HEAVIER MATERIALS IS LOWER THAN RESULTS PRESENTED FOR OTHER TESTS; (4) THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY FOR EXTRUDED AND EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE SHOULD BE TAKEN AT 0.03 KCAL/MH C AND 0,035- 0,040 K CAL/MH C RESPECTIVELY.
