BEHAVIOR OF A TANK FOUNDED ON SOFT CLAY

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A WELDED FUEL STORAGE TANK WITH FLEXIBLE BOTTOM, 140FT IN DIAMETER AND 56FT IN HEIGHT, THE TANK IS FOUNDED ON SOFT CLAY, TYPICAL OF THE VALLEY OF MEXICO, THICKNESS OF THE CLAY BEING SMALL IN COMPARISON WITH THE DIAMETER OF THE TANK. THE COMPRESSIBLE STRATA ARE UNDERLAIN BY DENSE DEPOSITS. A CONTROLLED WATER TEST WAS MADE ON THE FOUNDATION SOIL TO PRELIMINARY LOADING, PRIOR TO PLACING THE TANK IN SERVICE. VERTICAL MOVEMENTS WERE OBSERVED AT REFERENCE POINTS ON THE PERIPHERY OF THE TANK AND THEY ARE COMPARED WITH VALUES OBTAINED THROUGH TERZAGHI'S CONSOLIDATION THEORY. IT IS PROPOSED THAT THE STRUCTURE-SUBSOIL INTERACTION BE STUDIED, IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE POSSIBILITY OF BUCKLING OF THE SHELL, IN SIMILAR TANKS FOUNDED ON COMPRESSIBLE SOILS. /TRRL/
