SURVEY ON DISASTER DUE TO THE TOKACHI-OKI EARTHQUAKE 1968-- CHAPTER 6--DAMAGE TO HIGHWAY EMBANKMENTS AND PAVEMENTS

DETAILS OF THE DAMAGE TO ROADS CAUSED BY THE 1968 TOKACHI- OKI EARTHQUAKE ARE PRESENTED. ALMOST ALL THE DAMAGE TO ROADS WAS CAUSED BY THE SLIP FAILURES OF ROAD EMBAKMENTS. THE THE DAMAGES DUE TO THE EARTHQUAKE ARE CLASSIFIED INTO FOUR TYPES AND ARE DESCRIBED ACCORDING TO THEIR CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES. THE MAIN REASON OF THE FAILURE OF EMBANKMENTS IS THOUGHT TO BE THE WEAKNESS OF THE EMBANKMENT MATERIALS AGAINST THE WATER AND THE LIQUEFACTION OF THE MATERIAL CAUSED BY THE SEISMIC MOVEMENT. /TRRL/
