PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF STRUCTURAL DAMAGE, SAN FERNANDO, CALIFORNIA, EARTHQUAKE OF FEBRUARY 9, 1971

THE REPORT CONTAINS INFORMATION AND PHOTOGRAPHS OBTAINED DURING A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF THE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE OF FEBRUARY 1971. SINCE THE DAMAGE WAS QUITE WIDESPREAD, THE FAILURES OF ONLY A FEW RESIDENTIAL HOMES, COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS, AND FREEWAY BRIDGES WERE INSPECTED. LARGER STRUCTURES VISITED WERE A HYDRAULIC FILL DAM WHICH ALMOST FAILED COMPLETELY, TWO LARGE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION HOSPITAL BUILDINGS THAT COLLAPSED, AND THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY OLIVE VIEW MEDICAL CENTER. /NTIS/
