SOFT SOIL STABILIZATION

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE STABILIZATION OF AN EXTENSIVE AREA OF VERY SOFT SOIL ON THE ROUTE OF THE WESTERN PRIMARY ROUTE WHICH BY-OASSES PETERBOROUGH. THE STABILIZATION WAS CARRIED OUT WITH A SYSTEM OF 25 INTERCONNECTING LAND DRAINS, LAID 6 M APART, AND AVERAGING 130 M IN LENGTH. PIEZOMETERS FOR MEASURING PORE WATER PRESSURES AND INCLINOMETER TUBES FOR MEASURING LATERAL DEFORMATIONS WERE ALSO INSTALLED SO THAT STABILITY CHECKS COULD BE CARRIED OUT AS CONSTRUCTION PROCEEDED.
