Wacol Station Rd timber bridge inspection and assessment

The existing Wacol Station Road Timber Bridge was located at the Wacol Station Road in Wacol, Qld. It is a two-lane; two span bridge with both spans at about 10 meters. The superstructures comprised of a concrete slab decking supported by timber girders. GHD was appointed by Brisbane City Council (BCC) to conduct an inspection and rating of the current capacity and to provide any required maintenance and management options for Wacol Station Road bridge. As a consequence of the Level 3 Inspection and rating works, it was established that Wacol Bridge was sub-standard and therefore required immediate measures to be put in place to safeguard the community and road users through implementation of reduced speed restrictions as well as a weight restriction being posted for the structure. In addition, Brisbane City Council (BCC) also took steps to ensure the two cracked beams that were identified in previous inspections should be bolted up to prevent further damage to these beams. The objective of this paper is to give an overview on GHD’s works on the inspection and assessment stages, and how it was used to form the current structural risk management action carried out by BCC.
