The art of difficult access engineering inspection

Historically, inspection of structures has sometimes been regarded as a necessary evil to be undertaken with an air of compliant resignation and offering few benefits except providing grist to the asset management mill, input for the asset register audit and a convenient means of checking recently carried out maintenance works. But there is no doubt that a robust regime of inspection, properly established, maintained and recorded, will not only help the asset manager to meet his or her contractual obligations but also provide a framework on which to hang a meaningful and ongoing bridge maintenance system, thereby improving their lot overall. Difficult access, in the context of engineering inspection, can best be defined as the capability to admit trained and qualified staff into locations not accessible by conventional means.
