Traffic barrier and protection screen for heavy haul bridge over the Main Southern Railway

The heavy haul bridge over the Main Southern Railway is a 22 m single span bridge designed to comply with the bridge design code AS 5100 and the operation of a fully laden 163 t CAT 777F truck. Cast in-situ special performance traffic barriers are designed for the containment of a fully laden CAT 777F truck travelling at 30 km/hr. A safety-in-design workshop has identified the unacceptable risk of 2.5 t boulders leaving the truck and landing on the rail track. To minimise the risk, special protection screens attached to the bridge traffic barriers are incorporated into the design. This paper will outline design considerations for the special performance traffic barrier and its relationship with the loads provided in AS 5100. Furthermore, the unique design feature associated with the special protection screen is outlined.
