A Study on the Design of Highway Bridge Pile Foundations in Volcanic Ash Ground

In Japan, foundations to be constructed in volcanic ash ground are generally designed in accordance with the standards for sandy soil. However, it has been found that volcanic ash soil is crushable and has mechanical characteristics different from those of normal sandy soil. Accordingly, vertical loading tests were conducted by using actual piles in 14 construction sites to clarify the bearing mechanism of piles in volcanic ash ground. The results indicated a trend showing that pile shaft friction which contributes mainly to the bearing capacity of the pile was lower for pyroclastic flow deposits of volcanic ash soils than that for normal sandy soils. On the basis of the test results, technical recommendations were proposed for the design of highway bridge pile foundations in consideration of the mechanical characteristics of volcanic ash soil.
