Fundamental Study on the Simple Evaluation Methods for Particle size Distribution and Maximum/Minimum Void Ratio of Sand-gravel Mixtures

Deformation properties of soil materials are influenced by many parameters including gradation curve and void ratio. In railway tracks, fine materials mix with ballasts, due to repeated heavy train loads and particle crushing. Void ratio of ballast change with addition of fines. In this paper, a simple evaluation method for particle size distribution of soil materials including fine materials was proposed using an image analysis technique. The proposed method can evaluate gradation curves accurately for gravel and medium size sand though it cannot evaluate for fine sands. In second part of the paper, two numerical methods were adopted to evaluate maximum and minimum void ratios of sand-gravel mixtures. Medium size and Toyoura sand were mixed with gravel to simulate mixture of three materials in addition to binary mixtures of gravel and fine materials. Accuracy of numerical methods was studied with laboratory experiments.
