What’s Ahead for Asphalt Emulsions?

This article, the third in a series on asphalt emulsions, presents information gleaned from interviews with a group of asphalt industry professionals: Barry Baughman, Mark Ishee, and Gayle King. Topics covered include the issues and challenges presently facing the use of emulsion; specifications applicable to the use of emulsions with Superpave; new test procedures and new specifications currently evolving for asphalt emulsions; and new emulsion materials and treatments. The authors conclude by tying in the advances in this aspect of asphalt to current concerns about the environment. They stress that emulsion production and its usage in the maintenance and construction of roadways can result in a reduction in the carbon footprint as well as help restore and reuse the recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) already on the road.
