THE STRUCTURE AND SWELLING OF DIVALENT MONTMORILLANITES - A REVIEW

AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO RATIONALIZE THE WIDELY DIVERGENT VIEWS COMMONLY HELD REGARDING THE STRUCTURE AND THE NATURE OF SWELLING AND SHRINKAGE OF DIVALENT EXPANDING LATTICE CLAYS. THE REVIEW IS MAINLY QUALITATIVE. THIS ALLOWS A MORE GENERAL VIEW TO BE TAKEN THAN IS POSSIBLE IN MORE QUANTITATIVE DISCUSSIONS. IN PARTICULAR THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE DIFFUSE DOUBLE LAYER THEORY IS APPLICABLE IS DISCUSSED. /RRL/A/
