INVESTIGATION AND DESIGN FOR A ROAD TUNNEL BELOW THE MALABAR HILL IN BOMBAY

DETAILS OF A TENTATIVE PROJECT DESIGN FOR A TWIN-TUBE, 600 METER LONG HIGHWAY TUNNEL AT A MAXIMUM DEPTH OF ABOUT 50 METERS IS DESCRIBED. THE TWO-LANE TUBES ARE EXPECTED TO CARRY 76,000 VEHICLES PER DAY IN 1981. THE COMPOSITION OF 10 CORES TOTALING 375 METERS, DRILLED BY THE DIAMOND METHOD, IS DEPICTED, AND THE RESULTS OF PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION AND WATER-INTAKE TESTS ARE REPORTED. (THE CORES WERE PREDOMINANTLY BASALT EXCEPT AT THE EASTERN END.) THE RESULTS ARE RELATED TO THE GEOLOGY OF BOMBAY, WHICH IS FORMED OF SEVEN SEPARATE ISLANDS, AND ANTICIPATED CONSTRUCTION PROBLEMS DERIVING THEREFORM ARE LISTED AND SUGGESTIONS FOR OVERCOMING THEM MADE. AS THE TENTATIVE ROUTE WILL PASS UNDER AN OLD RESERVOIR AND A BUILT-UP AREA POSSESSING NUMEROUS OLD OR HIGH BUILDINGS, BLASTING EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED, THE RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM WHICH ARE PRESENTED. OTHER TESTS REPORTED IN BRIEF ARE NUCLEAR MOISTURE--DENSITY MEASUREMENTS, ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY LOGGING, AND IN-SITU E VALUES. THE DISCUSSION OF TUNNEL SECTION NOTES PARTICULARLY DESIGN FEATURES ASSOCIATED WITH A CURVE. RESULTS OF COMPUTING ROCK LOAD ON THE TUNNEL LINING BY VARIOUS THEORIES ARE SHOWN; THE LOADS COMPUTED BY THE FENNER AND TERZAGHI METHODS WERE IN CLOSE AGREEMENT, AND THE FORMER WAS SELECTED FOR DESIGN PURPOSES. A TABLE IS GIVEN DISPLAYING THE VARIOUS DESIGN STRESSES BY FENNER'S METHOD. CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE WIDTH OF THE CENTRAL WALL MASS BETWEEN THE TWO TUBES. DESIGNS FOR PLUG, PERMANENT SUPPORT, AND SEISMIC FORCES ARE STATED BRIEFLY. A COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT IS ACCORDED VENTILITION UNDER THE HEADINGS NATURAL VENTILATION, DESIGN CRITERIA AND PARAMETERS FOR ARTIFICIAL VENTILATION, TYPE OF VENTILATION SELECTED (LONGITUDINAL EXTRACTION), AND DETAILED DESIGN OF VENTILATION ARRANGEMENTS. THE FINAL SECTION RELATES TO ILLUMINATION AND POWER SECURITY.
