A MATHEMATICAL MATERIAL MODEL FOR GRANULAR SOILS, BASED ON ON CLASSICAL PLASTICITY THEORY, IS PROPOSED. THE YIELD SURFACE COMBINES A GENERALIZED IDEALLY PLASTIC COULOMB-MOHR FAILURE ENVELOPE WITH A MOVING CAP, CROSSING THE HYDROSTATIC LOADING AXIS, WHOSE POSITION DEPENDS ON PLASTIC VOLUMETRIC STRAIN. IT IS SHOWN HOW THIS MODEL CAN FIT LABORATORY TEST DATA FOR A PARTICULAR SAND SAMPLE. SIMILAR, BUT DIFFERENT, MODELS CAN BE CONSTRUCTED FOR APPLICATION TO THE RESPONSE OF ROCKS. /AUTHOR/
