THE BEHAVIOR OF BROKEN ROCK UNDER TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION

THE LABORATORY TEST RESULTS ON BROKEN CYLINDERS OF FOUR COAL MEASURE ROCKS ARE REPORTED. THE EFFECT OF CONFINING PRESSURE ON THE STRENGTH AND STRESS-STRAIN RELATIONS OF THE CYLINDERS WAS INVESTIGATED. EMPIRICAL RELATIONSHIPS ARE GIVEN FOR THE DEPENDENCE OF FAILURE STRESSES ON CONFINING PRESSURE AND OF THE SHEAR STRESS AT FAILURE ON COMPRESSIVE NORMAL STRESS. THESE RELATIONS ARE THEN USED TO DERIVE THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION AROUND A CURCULAR TUNNEL IN FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SUBJECTED TO AXIALLY SYMMETRIC STRESSES. /AUTHOR/
