MODERN OPEN-PIT BLASTING PRACTICE

MODERN BLASTING AGENTS FOR OPEN-PIT MINING ARE DESCRIBED. AMMONIUM NITRATE/FUEL OIL (AN/FO) AND SLURRY BLASTING AGENTS COMMERCIAL EXPLOSIVE INDUSTRY HAS EXPANDED INTO AN INDUSTRY THAT IS SEVERAL TIMES GREATER THAN BEFORE THEIR DISCOVERY 12 YEARS AGO. CAST BOOSTERS HAVE COME INTO PROMINENCE BECAUSE OF LOW COST, SAFETY, HIGH-DETONATION PRESSURES AND EXCELLENT BOOSTERING ACTION, ESPECIALLY FOR THE AN/FO AND SLURRY BLASTING AGENTS. BULK TRUCKS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR AN/FO BUT THE NEW METALLIZED AN/FO NEEDS BULK-HANDLING SYSTEMS. THE BULK-HANDLING OF SLURRY IS HANDLED BY ON-SITE BULK- MIXING AND LOADING. ECONOMIC COMPARISONS OF THESE AGENTS SHOW THAT SLURRY HAS A SUBSTANTIAL EDGE OVER AN/FO EVEN IN RELATIVELY EASY BLASTING, DESPITE A LARGER COST PER POUND. THIS IS THE RESULT OF SUPERIOR BLASTING QUALITIES AND HIGHER DENSITY OF SLURRY. FURTHER EXPANSION IS PREDICTED OF OPEN- PIT MINING RELATIVE TO UNDERGROUND MINING. SOVIET SCIENTISTS CLAIM TO HAVE PERFECTED METHODS WHICH APPLY TO HUGE QUANTITIES OF EXPLOSIVES IN SINGLE, POWERFUL BLASTS TO DIVERT RIVERS, FOR OPENING UP NEW MINES, FOR MOVING HUGE EARTH MASSES, & FOR CONSTRUCTING DAM FILLS. THE IMPLICATION OF THESE CLAIMS IS THAT NUCLEAR EXPLOSIVES MAY POSSIBLY BE USED IN ANY TYPE OF OPERATION WHERE SINGLE SHOTS, INVOLVING MANY THOUSANDS OF TONS OF CHEMICAL EXPLOSIVES, HAVE PREVIOUSLY BEEN USED SUCCESSFULLY. PROGRESS IN EXPLOSIVES HAS CONTRIBUTED AND WILL CONTINUE TO CONTRIBUTE IMPORTANTLY TO MORE EFFICIENT OPEN-PIT MINE OPERATIONS.
